About Kahlenberg
Kahlenberg rises on the northern edge of the Vienna Woods, and at 484 metres it's long been Vienna's favourite easy day-trip viewpoint — close enough for a half-day excursion, high enough for a genuinely sweeping panorama over the entire city, the Danube snaking through it, and on clear days the plains stretching toward Slovakia and Hungary. It also carries real historical weight: the hill was the staging ground for the combined European relief force that broke the 1683 Ottoman siege of Vienna, a turning point in European history.
Getting there works several ways: bus 38A runs directly from Heiligenstadt U-Bahn station through the Grinzing wine district to the summit in under 30 minutes, while more energetic visitors can take tram D to its Nussdorf terminus and hike up through vineyards and past scattered Heuriger taverns in about an hour. Vienna's longest road, the Höhenstraße, also connects by car with parking at the top.
