About Jewish Museum Vienna
The Jewish Museum Vienna operates across two locations a short walk apart. The main site, in the Palais Eskeles on Dorotheergasse, covers the history and culture of Vienna's Jewish community from the medieval period through the 19th-century's remarkable flourishing — Vienna was, for decades, one of Europe's great centres of Jewish intellectual and cultural life — to the devastation of the Nazi period and the community's much smaller postwar presence.
The second site, Museum Judenplatz, sits directly beneath Rachel Whiteread's Holocaust memorial on Judenplatz and centres on the excavated remains of a medieval synagogue destroyed in a 1421 pogrom, alongside exhibitions on medieval Jewish life in Vienna and context for the memorial above.
