About Staatsbibliothek Potsdamer Straße (Scharoun Building)
Part of the same architectural vision as the neighbouring Philharmonie concert hall, the Staatsbibliothek's Potsdamer Straße building was designed by Hans Scharoun and built between 1967 and 1978, its golden ochre-toned exterior and irregular, faceted massing making it one of the more distinctive — and to some, more divisive — pieces of the Kulturforum ensemble.
Inside, Scharoun rejected the conventional rectangular reading room entirely: the interior is organised as a series of polygonal, trapezoidal spaces connected by staircases, terraced and stepped rather than laid out on flat, uniform floors, with light pyramids and milky glass domes bringing indirect natural daylight down into the reading areas below — an approach to library interior design genuinely unlike almost anything else in Europe.

The General Reading Room here focuses on 20th- and 21st-century authors and topics, complementing rather than duplicating the older Unter den Linden building's more historically weighted collections, and functions as a fully working contemporary research library alongside its architectural distinction.
Free public guided tours covering the building's history, architecture and function run on the third Saturday of each month at 10:30am, with no registration required — a good option for visitors specifically interested in Scharoun's work or Kulturforum architecture generally, and a building easy to combine with the Gemäldegalerie, Neue Nationalgalerie or Musikinstrumenten-Museum on the same visit.

More to See in Berlin

Musikinstrumenten-Museum (Musical Instrument Museum)
Around 3,500 instruments spanning five centuries at the Kulturforum, including a 1929 Mighty Wurlitzer theatre organ still played on select Saturdays — a quiet, underrated stop next to the Philharmonie.

Gemäldegalerie
One of Europe's great Old Masters collections — Dürer, Botticelli, Titian, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Caravaggio housed at the Kulturforum, with far shorter queues than any equivalent gallery in Paris, London or Rome.

Neue Nationalgalerie
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's glass-and-steel modernist temple at the Kulturforum, restored by David Chipperfield — one of the most significant single buildings of 20th-century architecture, housing 20th-century art.
