About Story of Berlin
Opened in 1999 inside the Ku'damm Karree shopping centre on Kurfürstendamm, Story of Berlin takes a different approach from most of the city's history museums: rather than a chronological procession of artefacts, it's built as 23 separate themed rooms, each using multimedia, staged environments and design to convey a specific era or aspect of Berlin's 800-year history — from its medieval founding through Prussian growth, industrialisation, the Weimar years, Nazi rule, wartime destruction, division and reunification.
The format works especially well for visitors who want a fast, broad orientation to Berlin's history before diving into more specific sites elsewhere in the city — it's less rigorous than a dedicated academic museum but considerably more engaging as a first-time overview, and the room-by-room staging keeps momentum going in a way that dense text panels rarely manage.

The standout feature is a genuine nuclear fallout shelter built beneath the building during the Cold War, included on a guided tour as part of the standard ticket — a rare chance to walk through real Cold War civil defence infrastructure rather than a recreation, complete with period supplies and equipment intended to shelter hundreds of Berliners in the event of nuclear war.
Its central Kurfürstendamm location, inside an unglamorous shopping mall, makes it easy to combine with shopping or a walk to the nearby Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, and its interactive format tends to hold younger visitors' attention better than more traditional museums.
