About A'DAM Lookout
A'DAM Lookout occupies the top of the A'DAM Toren, a 22-storey building in Amsterdam-Noord originally constructed in 1971 as the headquarters of Royal Dutch Shell and known for decades simply as the Shell Tower. After Shell moved out, the building underwent a major renovation completed in 2016, reopening as a creative hub with a hotel, restaurants, event spaces and, at the very top, a public observation deck.
The deck delivers a genuinely different Amsterdam view than any church tower in the historic centre: rather than looking down at the canal ring, you look across the IJ waterway back at the entire old-city skyline, with the harbour, Centraal Station and container ships in the foreground — a view that captures the working-port side of Amsterdam most tourist photos leave out.

The building's signature attraction is Over the Edge, marketed as Europe's highest swing, which sends two riders at a time out over the tower's edge with nothing below but a 100-metre drop to the water — an optional paid add-on well beyond the standard admission ticket, not for anyone with a fear of heights.
Because reaching A'DAM Lookout requires crossing the IJ, most visitors combine it with a walk around the EYE Film Museum next door and a stop at NDSM or the Noord waterfront, making it a natural half-day excursion away from the historic centre rather than a quick add-on.
