About Vondelpark

Vondelpark opened in 1865, initially as a private initiative by a group of wealthy Amsterdam citizens who raised funds to buy land and hire landscape architect Jan David Zocher to design a walking and riding park in the fashionable English style. It reached its current 47-hectare size in 1877 and passed into municipal ownership in 1953; in 1996 it became one of the first city parks in the Netherlands designated a national monument, protecting its historic layout from redevelopment.

Today it's by far the most-used park in the Netherlands, drawing over 10 million visits a year from a mix of locals jogging, picnicking and cycling through, and tourists using it as a green corridor between the Museumplein museums and the Jordaan or Overtoom areas. A free open-air theatre runs performances through summer (a small donation is appreciated but not required), and the park's rose garden and ponds give it more variety than a simple flat lawn.

Named after the 17th-century poet and playwright Joost van den Vondel — sometimes called the Dutch Shakespeare — the park sits directly adjacent to Museumplein, making it an easy, free way to break up a heavy museum day with fresh air.

It's genuinely used by Amsterdammers rather than existing purely for tourists, which shows in the mix of cyclists commuting through, families out for the afternoon, and picnic groups on any warm day — a useful, low-key counterpoint to the ticketed sights nearby.
