Málaga gets far more sunshine than almost anywhere in northern Europe, but it does rain — particularly in autumn and spring. When it does, the city reveals just how much it has to offer indoors.

Here are eight indoor activities that work brilliantly with children, all within easy reach of the city centre.

MIMMA (Interactive Music Museum): 400+ instruments from around the world, many of which children can actually play. The highlight of many family visits to Málaga. Calle Beatas 15. Adults 4 EUR, children 2 EUR.

Automobile & Fashion Museum: Classic cars and haute couture in a spectacular 1930s tobacco factory. Far more engaging than it sounds — children love the cars, adults love the fashion. Free first Sunday of each month.

Centre Pompidou Málaga: Rotating collection from the Paris Pompidou on the waterfront. Free for under-18s. Check what's currently on before visiting.

Picasso Museum: The man was born here. The collection is personal and varied. Book in advance — queues are long in summer and on rainy days when everyone has the same idea.

Mercado Central de Atarazanas: Not a rainy day option strictly speaking (it closes at 14:30), but the covered market is a wonderful morning activity and the surrounding tapas bars are perfect for lunch.

Sea Life Benalmádena: 20 minutes from Málaga by bus or car, this is a well-run aquarium with good shark and ray displays. Best for children under 12.

Nerja Caves: An hour east of Málaga, the caves maintain a constant 18°C — cool in summer, warm on a cold rainy day. Book in advance.

Indoor play centres (for younger children): Bobby Jump and Click Park both have indoor play areas with slides, climbing frames, and soft play. Altitude Trampoline Park is better for older children.
