Top Things To Do With Kids in Málaga
Better Travel Tips — The Family
Two adults, two toddlers · More from this series →
Málaga is one of the best cities in Europe for a family holiday — compact enough to walk, warm almost year-round, full of things that engage children without boring adults, and significantly less expensive than Barcelona or Madrid.
Here is what we think works best for families, in rough order of priority.
Alcazaba and Gibralfaro: Children love castles, and the Alcazaba is a proper one — Moorish battlements, hidden gardens, towers to climb. Combined with Gibralfaro above (connected by a walled corridor), it's a two-to-three hour adventure. Combined ticket: 5.50 EUR adults, free for under-16s.
Muelle Uno and the waterfront: The regenerated port area is an easy, flat walk from the historic centre. Children can watch the boats, explore the waterfront, and visit the Centre Pompidou (free for under-18s). Good for a relaxed afternoon.
La Malagueta Beach: Ten minutes' walk from the city centre. The Mediterranean is calm, warm from June through October, and the beach has full facilities. The chiringuitos (beach bars) serve fresh seafood that most children will eat happily.
Parque de Málaga: The long park running between the historic centre and the seafront is excellent for younger children — wide paths, trees for shade, occasional fountains.
MIMMA Music Museum: Interactive instruments from around the world. Children aged five and upwards typically love it. Low cost, fully indoors, perfect for a hot afternoon or a rainy day.
Day trip to Mariposario Benalmádena: Twenty minutes west, Europe's largest butterfly park. Consistently one of the highlights of family visits to the Costa del Sol.
Best time to visit with kids: March to June or September to October. Summer (July–August) is very hot and very crowded. The shoulder seasons offer ideal temperatures and manageable crowds.
