About Peterskirche (St. Peter's Church)
A church has stood on this site since at least the early medieval period — legend and some archaeological evidence suggest a foundation stretching back to Roman-era Vindobona — but the building visitors see today dates to a Baroque reconstruction completed in the early 18th century, credited in part to Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach's circle, the same architectural world responsible for Karlskirche.
Squeezed onto a small square just off the Graben, one of Vienna's grandest shopping streets, the Peterskirche packs an oval nave, a richly frescoed dome and ornate gilded altarpieces into a compact footprint that feels almost theatrical after the wide-open scale of St. Stephen's Cathedral a few minutes' walk away. It was a favourite church of Empress Elisabeth (Sisi).
