About MUMOK — Museum Moderner Kunst

MUMOK — the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien — opened in its current MuseumsQuartier building in 2001 as Austria's flagship museum of 20th- and 21st-century art. Its collection runs from Pop Art and Fluxus through Nouveau Réalisme and post-war American abstraction, but its most distinctive holding is its deep archive of Viennese Actionism — the confrontational, body-centred performance art movement of 1960s Vienna that shocked audiences with work involving blood, ritual and taboo, and remains genuinely challenging viewing.

The building, a windowless basalt-lava-clad cube designed by Ortner & Ortner (the same firm behind the neighbouring Leopold Museum), was deliberately built dark and closed-off in contrast to its white neighbour, a visual argument about what modern art asks of its audience.

MUMOK doesn't have the crowd-pulling instant recognisability of Klimt or Schiele next door, which makes it one of the calmer, more rewarding stops in the MuseumsQuartier for visitors genuinely curious about 20th-century art history rather than ticking off famous names.
