About Museum für Fotografie (Helmut Newton Foundation)
The Museum für Fotografie occupies the former Landwehrkasino, a neoclassical building completed in 1909 for the officers of the Landwehr Inspection Berlin, badly damaged in World War II and later restored to house one of Berlin's two major photography institutions under a single roof, opposite Bahnhof Zoo.
The building's two lower floors house the Helmut Newton Foundation, dedicated to the Berlin-born fashion and portrait photographer whose work — glossy, provocative, often confrontationally sexualised images shot for Vogue and other major fashion publications from the 1960s through the 1990s — remains as divisive today as when it was first published. Newton left his archive to his native city on his death in 2004, and the foundation rotates selections from thousands of prints, contact sheets and personal items through changing exhibitions.

Upstairs, in the ornate Kaisersaal — the building's grandest surviving room — the Kunstbibliothek's Photography Collection presents a broader survey spanning the 19th to 21st centuries, making the museum a useful single stop for anyone interested in photography as a medium generally, not just Newton's specific body of work.
Its location directly opposite Zoo Station puts it on the way to or from the Zoo, Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and Ku'damm shopping district, making it an easy addition to a west Berlin day rather than a dedicated trip.
