About National Széchényi Library
The National Széchényi Library was founded in 1802 by Count Ferenc Széchényi, the same donation that also seeded the Hungarian National Museum's founding collection — the two institutions share a common origin before splitting into separate library and museum functions. Today it functions as Hungary's legal deposit library, meaning it holds a copy of essentially everything published in the country, alongside historically significant manuscripts, maps, sheet music and early printed books, totalling more than 8 million items.
Since the 1980s, the library has occupied a modern wing built into Buda Castle's Royal Palace complex, giving it an unusual split identity: a functioning national research library, staffed by scholars and serving serious academic researchers, operating inside one of the country's most visited tourist landmarks.
